Women’s Organizations in MisOcc unite to combat violence, empower communities

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL (PGMO) —Over 100 representatives from women’s organizations, social workers, and Gender and Development (GAD) focal persons convened to discuss two vital initiatives aimed at combating violence against women and empowering families in Misamis Occidental on September 17, 2024.

The meeting spotlighted the VAW FREE MISOCC campaign and the second phase of the GOV MOTABANG Program.

In her message, PGAD Focal Officer Lorelei Umali Cagas emphasized the importance of collective action saying, “Our ultimate goal is to support and uplift women and children, to eliminate violence in Misamis Occidental, and to strengthen women’s organizations throughout the region.”

The VAW FREE MiSOCc campaign seeks to raise awareness and combat violence against women through community engagement and information dissemination. Participants emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for women and children by fostering a culture of respect and support within their communities.

In addition, the meeting focused on the second phase of the GOV MOTABANG Program, which aims to strengthen women’s organizations and promote economic empowerment. Building on the success of the first phase, which distributed advocacy materials with contact information for local police stations across all barangays, schools, and public transport, phase two will introduce training and livelihood programs.

These initiatives are designed to equip women with the skills and resources necessary to contribute economically to their families, thereby enhancing their roles within both the household and the community.

The first phase of the GOV MOTABANG Program, titled "Misamis Occidental Tabang Alang sa Babaye/Bata Nga Giabusaran," has effectively raised awareness about available support systems for victims of abuse, ensuring that help is easily accessible.

As representatives shared their insights and experiences, a palpable sense of unity and determination filled the room, signaling a collective commitment to create lasting change.

The collaborative efforts of these organizations are expected to make a significant impact in the fight against violence and the economic empowerment of women in the region.

The event concluded with a powerful call to action for all stakeholders to work together, emphasizing that progress in these areas requires collective effort and sustained commitment. (Lorelei Umali Cagas/PGMO)
