MisOcc to celebrate historic milestone: Inauguration of Panguil Bay Bridge and Insurgency-Free status paves the way for sustainable development
Misamis Occidental (PGMO)—Misamis
Occidental is poised to mark a pivotal moment in its history with the upcoming
inauguration of the Panguil Bay Bridge. This ambitious infrastructure project
promises to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth across the
province and region.
Scheduled for September 27, the
ceremony will be graced by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, underscoring
the bridge's significance as not just a physical structure, but a powerful
symbol of progress.
Connecting Tangub City to Tubod,
Lanao del Norte, the 3.169-kilometer Panguil Bay Bridge is expected to
significantly reduce travel time and facilitate trade between Northern Mindanao
and surrounding areas. By improving access to markets and resources, this
transformative project is set to bolster the local economy.
In tandem with the bridge's
inauguration, the province proudly celebrates its newly declared
insurgency-free status. This achievement is the result of concerted efforts
from local government units, the military, and community organizations, all
working together to foster peace and stability in the region.
“A united spirit, strengthened
cooperation, and collaboration between provincial and local government units,
government agencies, private organizations, affected communities, and the
Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion led to this significant declaration,”
said Governor Henry Oaminal.
For over 50 years, Misamis
Occidental faced challenges from the Communist Party of the Philippines-New
People’s Army National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF). Groups like Guerrilla
Front Sendong wreaked havoc in the province since the 1970s, creating an environment
so dire that government agencies were hesitant to reach remote areas, leaving
residents without essential services.
Governor Oaminal reflected on his
past as a leader: “Social injustice was a constant reality. I witnessed the
effects of insurgency firsthand and committed to uplifting the living
conditions of marginalized sectors, especially in conflict-affected areas.”
To promote peace, safety, and
security, the governor has improved roads, bridges, and constructed
multipurpose halls across various barangays. These initiatives have greatly
enhanced access to social, emergency, and rescue services, while also
stimulating economic activities, allowing farmers to transport goods more
efficiently.
The dismantling of Guerrilla
Front Sendong and other groups under the Western Mindanao Regional Party
Committee is a testament to the unity between local government and partner
stakeholders. The 10th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines,
led by Lt. Col. Jose Andre Monje, has shown unwavering valor, diligently
enforcing security measures and pursuing insurgents across provincial borders.
With the reduction of insurgency,
investment opportunities have surged, encouraging businesses to establish
operations in Misamis Occidental. Local officials express optimism, noting that
the bridge and the newfound peace will attract tourists and foster local
industries.
"This is a historic day for
our province," declared Governor Oaminal. "The bridge is not just a
structure; it embodies hope, opportunity, and a brighter future for our
people." As the inauguration approaches, excitement fills the air, with
residents eager to witness the event and celebrate their community’s progress.
