Misamis Occidental to make history as host of ASEAN+ Individual Chess Championships 2025
MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL – Making
history in the world of sports, the Province of Misamis Occidental will
officially host the ASEAN+ Individual Chess Championships 2025, following the
signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Provincial Government
and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) on August 9, 2025.
The MOA, signed by NCFP President
and Chairman Hon. Prospero A. Pichay Jr. and Misamis Occidental Governor Henry
S. Oaminal, grants the province the honor of staging one of the most
prestigious international chess tournaments sanctioned by the ASEAN Chess
Confederation (ACC), scheduled for November 2-10, 2025. The signing was
witnessed by NCFP Chief Executive Officer FST/GM Jayson Gonzales, AMOFCA
President NA/NM Engr. Rey Urbiztondo, distinguished lawyer, International
Arbiters, and International Masters.
Governor Oaminal expressed pride in bringing the event to Misamis Occidental, emphasizing its alignment with the province’s vision for sports excellence, youth engagement, and international cooperation. “I want to support Philippine chess because I believe that with the right backing, our Filipino players can excel globally and have a real chance to earn prestigious Grandmaster titles. Filipinos have the talent and intellect to compete on the world stage. This tournament will inspire our young and aspiring athletes to elevate the country’s standing in the international arena,” the governor said.
Meanwhile, NCFP President and
Chairman Hon. Prospero A. Pichay Jr. said, “This event is not only about
winning medals but also about building connections, inspiring our youth, and
showing the world that Misamis Occidental and the Philippines can host tournaments
of the highest caliber.”
The tournament will feature players from 23 countries, including Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Laos, Macau-China, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Timor-Leste, USA, and Vietnam—a testament to its global reach and competitive level.
The ASEAN+ Individual Chess
Championships 2025 is expected to gather top grandmasters, international
masters, and FIDE titleholders for the Masters section, as well as National
Masters for the Challengers section—similar to the prestigious Far East Bank International
Open of the past. With elite players from across Southeast Asia and beyond,
this event further cements Misamis Occidental’s reputation as an emerging hub
for international sports events. (SN/PGMO)
