Governor Henry Oaminal rolls out ₱20/kilo rice in Misamis Occidental: A First in Mindanao

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL — In a bold and historic move to ease the burden of rising rice prices, Governor Henry S. Oaminal officially launched the Asenso BBM Rice Program (Baratong Bugas para sa Misamisnon) on June 30, 2025, offering rice at just ₱20 per kilo—a first-of-its-kind rollout in Mindanao.

The rollout was held simultaneously at MOPAC Grandstand in Oroquieta City, IBJT Terminal in Ozamiz City, and KSK Service Bay Area in Tangub City, through the Asenso Misamis Occidental Kadiwa Centers, in full support of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s commitment to lowering rice prices and making affordable rice accessible to every Filipino.

On July 7, the BBM Kadiwa Center also opened at the Town Center in Clarin, further expanding the program’s reach.

“Bugas para sa Misamisnon is our way of supporting President Marcos’ program to lower rice prices,” said Governor Oaminal. “We are the first province in Mindanao to implement the BBM Rice initiative. We launched it last year at ₱43 per kilo, then lowered it to ₱40 for vulnerable sectors, and later to ₱30. Today, we are making it even more accessible through Kadiwa Centers in Tangub, Ozamiz, Oroquieta—and now Clarin—offering rice at just ₱20 per kilo.”

Each household may purchase up to 25 kilograms of BBM rice while supplies last. A valid ID or barangay certification is required to verify residency within the town or city in the province.

Coinciding with the Oath-Taking Ceremony of newly elected provincial, city, and municipal officials, the June 30 event marked the fourth wave of BBM Rice distribution in Misamis Occidental—but the first time it is sold at ₱20 per kilo.

The program not only provides relief to low-income families but also empowers local farmers—by purchasing their harvests at fair prices and offering rice at affordable rates to Misamisnons—while reinforcing food security across the province.

One grateful beneficiary, Nenita Jalem from Barangay Carangan, Ozamiz City, shared,"Malipayon kaayo mi nga ang among pamilya naka-tilaw gyud sa bugas nga barato. Dako gyud mi’g pasalamat sa among Mayor, Congressman, Gobernador, ug sa among Partylist. Instead nga ipalit namo og bugas nga mahal, nakapalit mi og barato, makaparesan pa gyud og lami-lami nga sud-an. Makapadayon unta ni nga programaha aron dili na magutom ang among pamilya."

The Baratong Bugas para sa Misamisnon Program is a flagship initiative of the Asenso Administration, led by Governor Oaminal, reflecting a strong commitment to food affordability, social equity, and uplifting the daily lives of every Misamisnon.

The program will soon expand to other LGUs in the province of Misamis Occidental. (SN/PGMO)
