Swift response, united support: PGMO, Ozamiz LGU, and DSWD extend lifeline to Catadman fire victims



OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental — In response to the June 6 fire that displaced 27 families and affected 110 individuals in Purok 1, Barangay Catadman, the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental (PGMO), the Ozamiz City LGU, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through 2nd District Congressman Ando Oaminal joined forces to provide immediate and meaningful support to affected residents.

In a unified show of leadership and compassion, Governor Henry S. Oaminal, Congressman-elect Mayor Indy Oaminal, and city officials personally visited the victims to deliver financial and relief assistance and assurance of long-term housing support.

Immediate Relief Distribution

PGMO provided each affected family with ₱10,000 in cash, four food packs, and ₱1,000 in additional aid.Ozamiz City LGU extended ₱8,000 to boarders and extended families with partially damaged homes, ₱15,000 to those with total damage, and ₱25,000 to homeowners whose houses were completely destroyed.DSWD also contributed ₱10,000 in cash, family food packs, and hygiene kits to support recovery efforts.

A Push for Safer Housing and Compliance

In his message, Mayor Indy Oaminal emphasized the need to respect national housing laws requiring proper permits before construction, laws enacted decades ago to protect lives from preventable hazards like fire and flooding. “Daghang pamilya ang nagpuyo sa peligro nga wala sila kabalo. But while homes and belongings can be rebuilt, life can never be replaced. We are thankful no lives were lost,” he said.

Catadman, according to Mayor Oaminal, is among the communities identified for relocation and safe housing, with planning already underway as part of the city’s broader effort to remove families from danger zones.

Provincial Commitment to Rebuilding Lives

Governor Henry Oaminal reiterated the commitment of the provincial and congressional leaders under the banner of Alagang Oaminal to assist in the recovery and take on the financial responsibility for building safer homes once relocation plans are finalized.
