Misamis Occidental moving forward: Governor Oaminal highlights progress under Asenso leadership
Oroquieta City, Misamis
Occidental – In a compelling address during his radio interview, Governor
Henry Oaminal delivered an optimistic and impactful report on the strides made
under the "Asenso Misamis Occidental" leadership, highlighting
transformative developments in agriculture, infrastructure, the economy,
healthcare, tourism, education, and other essential services. The governor’s
message resonated with both pride and purpose, capturing the province’s journey
from rural obscurity to emerging prosperity.
A People-Centered Vision: The
5Ms of Development
Governor Oaminal reaffirmed his
administration’s core development framework—the 5Ms: Misamisnon Magpuyong
Malinawon, Malambuon ug Malipayon (Peaceful, Progressive, and Happy
Misamisnons). These principles, he said, have steered their governance and
guided investments toward improving not just infrastructure, but everyday
living conditions for the people.
“The real development is not just
about roads and infrastructure, but improving the lives of Misamisnons through
peace, prosperity, and public service,” he emphasized.
Agricultural Breakthroughs:
From Struggle to Sufficiency
As a predominantly agricultural
province, Misamis Occidental has placed strong emphasis on rural development.
Governor Henry Oaminal highlighted the Asenso Rice Full Assistance Program
(ARFA) as a key initiative that has significantly boosted rice production and
increased farmer income.
With comprehensive support—from
land preparation to post-harvest marketing—farmers now enjoy higher yields,
reaching 5.3 metric tons per hectare, surpassing the national average of 4.9
metric tons. The provincial government also buys produce at ₱1–2 higher than
market rates, ensuring better earnings for local farmers.
In a major push for food
affordability, the province has steadily reduced rice prices through the BBM
(Baratong Bugas para sa Misamisnon) program.
Governor Oaminal also shared that
the provincial government is finalizing systems to purchase rice directly from
local farmers. This move not only secures stable income for farmers but also
supports the province’s goal of making affordable rice accessible to all
households. “We are aligning with the national goal of reaching ₱20 per kilo.
If not by the end of this month, we are confident we can achieve it by next
month,” Oaminal said.
Economic Transformation: From
“Poorest” to Fast-Growing
“Sauna, we were considered one of
the poorest provinces,” Oaminal admitted. However, through consistent efforts,
Misamis Occidental is now recognized as one of the Top 15 fastest-growing
provinces in the Philippines, according to evaluations by the Philippine
Statistics Authority and NEDA.
This growth is evident not only
in statistics but also in the daily lives of Misamisnons, thanks to the
improved peace and order situation. “Our province is now insurgency-free,” he
proudly announced.
Health & Social Services:
Making Healthcare Accessible
Recognizing the vital role of
healthcare in development, the governor highlighted the ongoing upgrades to
major hospitals: MHARS Medical Center has been expanded to 1,000 beds, while
the Misamis Occidental Provincial Hospital is being transformed into the Asenso
Misamis Occidental Medical Center, with new specialty services in the pipeline.
Free hospitalization under the
Medical Assistance for Indigent and Financially Incapacitated Patients Program
(MAIPP), along with the Asenso Program, continues to benefit countless
families. With strong support from 1st District Representative Jason Almonte
and 2nd District Representative Sancho Fernando “Ando” Oaminal, this initiative
addresses both immediate medical needs and long-term health resilience.
Tourism & Infrastructure:
Gateway to Global Recognition
Tourism is another major pillar
of the Asenso vision. Governor Oaminal revealed the ongoing development of
high-impact attractions, including: Asenso Global Gardens – featuring flora
from around the world, backed by a ₱100 million TIEZA grant through Senator
Lito Lapid and GM Mark Lapid. Asenso Misamis Occidental and Aquamarine Park,
Maldives-Inspired Beach Resort – targeting a soft opening later this year, it
promises to draw both local and foreign tourists. The U River Nautical Route –
aiming to connect Siquijor and Misamis Occidental through a two-hour ferry,
making the province a new gateway in the VisMin tourism circuit.
These projects are designed not
just to attract visitors, but also to create jobs and drive inclusive economic
growth.
Sustaining Progress Through
Unity
The governor attributed these
accomplishments to the strong backing of Misamisnons and national leaders who
share the province’s vision. “This is a vote of confidence—not just in me, but
in the team and our shared dream,” he said, acknowledging the support of the
Marcos administration and the senators who topped local elections.
Looking Ahead: The Work
Continues
Despite the progress, Governor
Oaminal remained grounded in his outlook. "Wala pata katunga sa atong
tinguha," he said. "We’re not even halfway to our goal."
He concluded with a heartfelt
message of gratitude and renewed commitment:
“To our people, our partners, and above all, to God—thank you for the guidance,
trust, and strength. We will continue to work harder, not for politics, but for
the people of Misamis Occidental.” (SN/PGMO)
