PBBM graces declaration of insurgency-free status of Misamis Occidental

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL - A testament to the unwavering dedication and collaborative efforts of the national and local governments, security forces, and the community in fostering peace and stability in the province, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos graces the special declaration of insurgency-free status of Misamis Occidental province, September 27 at Tangub City Global College Sports Complex in Tangub City.

For over 50 years, Misamis Occidental has faced formidable challenges posed by the CPP- NPA-NDF rebel groups, particularly the guerilla fronts Joji and Sendong of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC).

Groups like Guerrilla Front Sendong wreaked havoc in the province since the 1970s, creating an environment so dire that government agencies were hesitant to reach remote areas, leaving residents without essential services.

The dismantling of Guerrilla Front Sendong and other groups under the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee is a testament to the unity between local government and partner stakeholders.

After the dismantling of the final rebel group in December last year, Philippine Army Major General Gabriel Viray, commander of the 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division, announced the official declaration together with Governor Henry S. Oaminal that the province has become insurgency-free.

Viray commended the province's support in implementing anti-insurgency measures.

"I want you to know the significant effort that was made under Governor Oaminal's leadership in dismantling Guerilla Front Sendong," Viray said.

Successful military operations bolstered by local government initiatives

The provincial government of Misamis Occidental stepped up its efforts to facilitate the peaceful surrender of rebels, offering incentives such as financial rewards or livelihood packages for their return to the community.

"Thanks to his [Governor Henry Oaminal’s] guidance and support to our units, especially the 10th Infantry Battalion, the 102nd Brigade and the 1st Infantry Tabak Division, the province allocated funds as a reward for those who facilitated the surrender or neutralization of these rebels," Viray added.

Further, Viray shared that the funds from the province expedited their operations, fostered greater cooperation among the populace, and bolstered the efforts of their units on the ground to dismantle the last remaining guerrilla front in the [Zamboanga] Peninsula and Misamis Occidental.

Meanwhile, the 10th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, led by Lt. Col. Jose Andre Monje, has shown unwavering valor, diligently enforcing security measures and pursuing insurgents across provincial borders.

Peace, safety and security

To promote peace, safety, and security, the governor has improved roads, bridges, and constructed multipurpose halls across various barangays. These initiatives have greatly enhanced access to social, emergency, and rescue services, while also stimulating economic activities, allowing farmers to transport goods more efficiently.

With the reduction of insurgency, investment opportunities have surged, encouraging businesses to establish operations in Misamis Occidental.

“A united spirit, strengthened cooperation, and collaboration between provincial and local government units, government agencies, private organizations, affected communities, and the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion led to this significant declaration,” said Governor Henry Oaminal.

In a statement, Oaminal shared his gratitude for "the opportunity to cooperate and collaborate with our military forces, for our common goal of peace and order in every community."

"This milestone is a testament to the strength of our unity, and what we can achieve when we lead and work with it in our minds and our hearts," Oaminal said. (PGMO)
