Top PH Chessers compete in 2nd Gov. Oaminal Open tournament
Misamis Occidental ---Reigning national champion International Master (IM)
Daniel Quizon and Grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo headline a formidable lineup in
the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament, taking place from July 9
to 10 at the AYA Hotel and Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental.
Joining the competition are defending champion IM Joel Pimentel and players from the Dasmariñas Chess Academy, including IM Michael Concio Jr., FIDE Master (FM) Roel Abelgas, and National Master (NM) Mar Aviel Carredo.
The tournament
will also see participation from other rated players such as IMs Eric Labog,
Rolando Nolte, Ronald Bancod, Rico Mascarinas, Kim Steven Yap, NM Joey
Florendo, Rommel Ganzon, US Chess Master Marlon Bernardino Jr., and labor
arbiter judge Jason Bandal.
Around 300 participants are expected to compete in this event, which is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
Hall of
Famer and Asia’s first Grandmaster Eugene Torre is expected to lead the
ceremonial moves, along with Gov. Henry S. Oaminal, Mayor Henry Oaminal Jr.,
and Rep. Sancho Fernando Oaminal.
The FIDE-rated rapid competition offers a total of P355,000 in cash prizes, with the open champion receiving a top prize of P50,000. The top 20 players will also receive consolation prizes.
Additionally, there are cash prizes for
the top players in the High School (Under-17), Elementary (U-13), and Misamis
Occidental categories. Special category prizes will be awarded to the top
senior (60+), top junior (20 and below), top lady (U17), top lady (U13), and
top lady (open).
The tournament coincides with the celebration of the 76th Ozamiz City Charter Anniversary and the feast of Nuestra Sra. dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi. It is organized by the Asenso Misamis Occidental Federated Chess Association in coordination with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental.
