Final concrete pouring of Panguil Bay Bridge marks major milestone towards completion, says Governor Oaminal
OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis
Occidental—Governor Henry S. Oaminal recently shared exciting updates regarding
the Panguil Bay Bridge project during an interview. He extended his gratitude
to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan for officiating the last pouring activity, marking a significant
milestone towards the bridge's completion, on July 4.
Reflecting on the bridge's
history, Governor Oaminal noted that the dream of the Panguil Bay Bridge has
been long-standing, cherished by generations of leaders and residents from both
Misamis Occidental and Lanao Del Norte. It was in 2013, during his tenure as
Representative of the 2nd District of Misamis Occidental, that he revisited the
feasibility study for the bridge's construction. Despite previous bidding
attempts under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme, financial viability
concerns hindered progress.
"During the presidency of
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the bridge was conceptualized and even bid out three
times, but there were no takers due to the financial projections. The
feasibility study indicated that the toll fee needed to be P800 for the first
five years, making it unaffordable compared to the existing barge fee of
P180," Oaminal explained.
In collaboration with now
Governor Angging Dimaporo of Lanao Del Norte, Oaminal successfully revisited
and approved the feasibility study through the NEDA Board. Initially planned
under the General Appropriations Act (GAA), the project faced funding challenges
due to the requirement of foreign technology and contractors. Consequently, the
funding source was shifted to Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the
Korean Export-Import Bank (Korea EximBank).
Expressing his gratitude,
Governor Oaminal acknowledged Secretary Bonoan's political will and the
leadership of President Bongbong Marcos in pushing the project to its final
stages. The bridge is expected to be operational by August, with plans for
President Bongbong Marcos to attend the inauguration.
"Ang atong mga katawhan maoy
malipayon kay mahatagan na og katumanan ang dugay nang gipangandoy (Our people
are happy because their long-held dream is finally being realized),"
Oaminal shared.
The Panguil Bay Bridge will
significantly enhance connectivity, linking Misamis Occidental to all regions
in Mindanao, thereby boosting economic growth and improving the lives of local
residents. (SN/PGMO)
