IM Daniel Quizon wins 2nd Gov. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament
International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon from
Dasmariñas, Cavite, emerged victorious at the 2nd Gov. Henry Oaminal Open Chess
Tournament rapid division, which concluded on Wednesday at AYA Hotel and
Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental.
Quizon secured his win by drawing with fellow
Dasmariñas native IM Michael Concio Jr. in the ninth and final round, finishing
with 7.5 points. Despite tying for the top spot with Concio, Grandmaster (GM)
Darwin Laylo of Dasmariñas, and IM Eric Labog Jr. of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya,
Quizon claimed the championship title through the tie-break rule.
"I am happy to have won the 2nd Gov. Henry
S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament. I wish that my luck would remain the same in
my next tournament," said the 19-year-old Quizon, who took home the
P100,000 prize for his victory.
Concio, Laylo, and Labog took the second, third,
and fourth places, receiving P60,000, P40,000, and P20,000 respectively.
The tournament, which featured chess
hall-of-famer GM Eugene Torre during the opening and awarding ceremonies, was
part of the celebration for the 76th Ozamiz City Charter Anniversary and the
Feast of Nuestra Sra. dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi. It was
organized by the Asenso Misamis Occidental Federated Chess Association in
coordination with the provincial government of Misamis Occidental.
Other notable scorers included National Master
(NM) Joey Albert Florendo of Zamboanga City and Rodney Opada of Ozamis City,
both with 7.0 points. Players with 6.5 points each included Fide Master (FM)
David Elorta of Manila, Johnnel Balquin of Cagayan de Oro City, Nazario Ubanan
of Cagayan de Oro City, Michel Jackson Ambuang of Dipolog City, FM Roel Abelgas
of Dasmariñas, Abdelmunim Hassan of Jolo, Sulu, Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Julius
Dan Augustine Ablin of Iligan City, Jeriel Manlimbana of Malaybalay, Bukidnon,
and Johnny Wellem Carzano of Tangub City.
In the elementary and high school divisions,
Quarl Maverick Vera Cruz of Balingoan, Misamis Oriental, and NM Keith Adriane
Ilar of El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, emerged as champions, each winning
P60,000.
